SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join BEC: Austin for their monthly meeting featuring a presentation and lunch. \nREGISTER NOW \nPrefabricated Exterior Wall Assemblies: Herding Cats in Hard Hats \n \nPrefabrication of exterior wall assemblies has been explored since the 1920s and 1930s\, so the concept of their use is nothing new to the built environment. However\, consideration of the effects on the air\, water\, and thermal boundaries of buildings are the concerns of the construction industry for the 21st century. No matter if the wall assembly is constructed in the field or in a shop\, it must have continuity in their air\, water\, and thermal barriers. Prefabricated exterior wall assemblies are designed and constructed to meet these requirements. In this presentation\, our goal will be to introduce two perspectives on the use of prefabricated exterior wall assemblies. One is the General Contractor’s experience with prefabricated exterior wall assemblies and the delegated design process. The other is the experience of the building enclosure consultant reviewing the design and observing the fabrication and erection of these wall systems. Case studies will be reviewed with respect to code and/or industry association inspection requirements\, design and construction reviews\, and lessons learned in the coordination of these assemblies with other trades. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDescribe the history and different types of prefabricated exterior wall panels.\nContracting and coordinating the delegated design process with the applicable trade partners. Turn-Key\, Means & Methods\, and discuss who owns the details.\nApplicable codes and standards. Explore how to test and inspect these assemblies.\nDemonstrate the process of designing and construction of the prefabricated exterior wall assembly and how it incorporates the air\, thermal and water barriers within it.\n\n1 LU/HSW \nREGISTER NOW \nSpeakers\nKayla Maines and Howard Colton with Terracon\, and Trevor Brown with JE Dunn. \n \n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas. \nInterdisciplinary: architects\, engineers\, contractors\, building owners\, consultants\, facility managers\, code officials\, educators\, manufacturers\, and those with a stake in building enclosure performance \nExchange of information: discussion\, training\, education\, outreach\, and awareness \nBuilding enclosures and related science: energy-efficiency\, moisture control\, indoor air quality\, longevity\, and durability \nBEC: Austin typically meets the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm. To receive reminders\, please sign up for the BEC mailing list here.\n2026 BEC: Austin Committee\nChair: Michael Salinas\, AIA\nChair Elect: John Byrd\, AIA\nAIA Austin staff liaison: Julia Brown

SUMMARY:Advocacy Roundtable: Protecting the Profession Amid Political Unpredictability
DESCRIPTION:The first AIA Austin Advocacy Roundtable of the year will collaboratively explore recent regulatory decisions and government actions that impair the ability of Architects to fully serve their clients and communities and to protect the health\, safety\, and welfare of building occupants. The suddenness\, lack of consultation\, ambiguity\, aggression\, and failure to address external consequences of these actions both results from and contributes to a volatile and precarious political and cultural landscape. In light of the ongoing uncertainty\, this Roundtable brings together professionals directly impacted by local\, state\, and federal actions who will share the background of one issue and the professional and personal impact it has had. Participants will together discuss strategies individual professionals\, practices\, and AIA can take to proactively protect the profession in light of the new modus operandi in government. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss the pending proposal from the Department of Education to remove of the “professional” designation from professional architecture degrees\, its potential impact on the education and training of future architects\, and strategies to challenge the change.\nAssess the potential impacts of the State Comptroller revoking certification of all Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs) not based on veteran status and explore potential substitutions of other programs and opportunities.\nDescribe the inadvertent redefinition of “Gross Floor Area” in the Land Development Code by the Austin Board of Adjustments and discuss the opportunity to fix ambiguous code and inconsistently applied interpretations.\nStrategize ways to proactively protect and support Architects and related design professionals as they need to adapt to changing regulatory and technical requirements while preparing for further unforeseeable changes.\n\nSpeakers:\nFederal\, State and Local: TBD\nModerator: Jason John Paul Haskins\, AIA + LEED AP BD+C \nFormat:\nModerated roundtable with three featured professionals and open discussion. SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join BEC: Austin for their monthly meeting featuring a presentation and lunch. REGISTER NOW>> \nThe Architect’s Building Science Toolkit\n \nWUFI is a hygrothermal modeling software tool used to evaluate how heat\, air\, and moisture move through building enclosure assemblies\, and it can be a powerful addition to an architect’s building science toolkit. This course demystifies hygrothermal analysis and shows how\, with a manageable amount of work\, architects can integrate it into their design process to evaluate wall and roof assemblies\, test common assumptions\, and move beyond rules of thumb and “code minimum” thinking – you don’t need a PhD. \nUsed as a design tool\, hygrothermal analysis supports health and safety by reducing the likelihood of conditions that contribute to mold growth\, improving the durability and longevity of construction\, and helping anticipate moisture risks and understand drying potential for new construction\, renovations\, and historic preservation. It also supports environmental stewardship by enabling more confident evaluation of insulation and enclosure strategies that can reduce energy use without inadvertently increasing moisture-related failure risk. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe what hygrothermal analysis is.\nUnderstand how hygrothermal analysis software can be used as a design tool and become familiar with the process.\nUnderstand the conditions where mold growth can occur.\nExamine several case studies to see how hygrothermal analysis improved durability and performance of roof and wall assemblies.\n\nCredits:\n1 LU/HSW \nPresenter:\nWill Wood\, AIA\, is a Principal at McKinney York Architects. Educated in architecture and engineering\, he maintains an interest in both design and building science.  In addition to leading design on institutional\, commercial\, and residential projects\, Will oversees sustainability and fueling the design culture in the office. He has a strong interest in materiality and detailing and is an advocate for modernizing building practices and energy efficiency. \nREGISTER NOW>> \n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas.
