The consequences can be significant for the occupants\, builders\, and designers. The causes vary\, but often\, the rating of the selected window product simply does not meet the project demands or expectations. This presentation explains how manufactured window and door units resist wind pressure (structurally)\, as well as water penetration and air leakage. It also explains how window products are tested\, rated\, and certified\, and applicable code requirements. \nLearning objectives: \n\nDefinitions and naming conventions related to manufactured window products.\nCritical performance aspects of windows related to:\n\nStructural attachment\nWater and air leakage\n\n\nHow windows are tested\, rated\, and certified\nSelecting windows for specific projects based on their certification\nCodes and standards that apply to manufactured window products.\n\n1 LU/HSW \nREGISTER NOW \nMatt Carlton \n \nMr. Carlton is a Unit Manager and Principal in WJE’s Austin\, Texas office with 29 years of experience in assessment and repair design for a wide variety of structural and architectural materials and systems. Over his career\, he has investigated hundreds of building envelope-related problems.  He has served as a consultant and the designer of record for building envelope repairs\, complete re-cladding projects\, and new building envelopes.  He has also performed peer reviews and building envelope commissioning on several projects.  In addition to being a Professional Engineer in seven states\, Mr. Carlton helped start the Austin Chapter of the Building Enclosure Council\, is a past president of the Austin Chapter of the Structural Engineers Association of Texas\, and serves on ASTM Committee C11. He also serves on WJE’s Board of Directors. \n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas. \nInterdisciplinary: architects\, engineers\, contractors\, building owners\, consultants\, facility managers\, code officials\, educators\, manufacturers\, and those with a stake in building enclosure performance \nExchange of information: discussion\, training\, education\, outreach\, and awareness \nBuilding enclosures and related science: energy-efficiency\, moisture control\, indoor air quality\, longevity\, and durability \nBEC: Austin typically meets the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm. SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join BEC: Austin for their monthly meeting featuring a presentation and lunch. \nUsing WUFI in an Architecture Office\nPresented by Will Wood\, AIA\, RID\, Principal at McKinney York Architects \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHygrothermal analysis software is a specialized tool that may appear to be inaccessible to Architects\, but with a moderate amount of preparation and work\, it can be successfully integrated into a single-discipline Architecture practice. It can be used to improve the durability of residential and commercial work\, inform design decision-making beyond projects with the means to support specialized consultants\, move beyond traditional rules of thumb and code minimums\, and make it easier for Architects to join the conversation on current practices. \nLearning Objectives:\n1. Describe what hygrothermal analysis is.\n2. Analyze how hygrothermal analysis software can be used as a design tool and become familiar with the process.\n3. State the pros and cons of adding this to architectural services\, and how it can be a differentiator in practice.\n4. Examine several case studies to see how hygrothermal analysis improved durability and performance of roof and wall assemblies. \n1 LU/HSW (pending) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW \nWill Wood\, AIA\, RID\nMcKinney York Architects \n \nWill Wood is a Principal at McKinney York Architects. Educated in architecture and engineering\, he maintains an interest in both design and building science.  In addition to leading design on institutional\, commercial\, and residential projects\, Will oversees sustainability and fueling the design culture in the office. He has a strong interest in materiality and detailing\, and is an advocate for modernizing building practices and energy efficiency.
