SUMMARY:Urban Design Speaker Series: Jill Amezcua
DESCRIPTION:The Urban Design Committee’s 2026 Speaker Series continues this month with Jill Amezcua of Austin Planning\, Urban Design Division who will share more about ongoing updates to the Great Streets Plan. Adopted in 2001\, the Great Streets Program ” aims to enhance the livability\, safety\, vitality\, and aesthetics of Downtown Austin by designing streets for everyone rather than primarily for vehicles that drive through the heart of Austin.” Through community engagement\, the plan will now be updated to incorporate related City plans and initiatives and modernize strategies to improve the pedestrian experience. \nWe’ll discuss ways that this project prioritizes the public realm and exemplifies the principles of urbanism through placemaking and thoughtful design. \nNo CE\, but lunch will be provided. To help us plan lunch\, please register below.\nRegister Here \n\nAbout Urban Design \nThe AIA Austin Urban Design Committee aims to improve the quality of the urban environment by promoting excellence in design\, planning\, and public policy in the built environment. The Urban Design Committee\, in concert with allied community and professional groups\, promotes programs that teach and inform professionals and the public about the design and development of quality urban spaces and environments. \nAll are welcome to the Urban Design Committee meetings. Meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of each month at 12:00 PM. Information provided in to our mailing list. Sign up for our mailing list here

SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join BEC: Austin for their monthly meeting featuring a presentation and lunch. \nBuilding Enclosure Control Layer Fundamentals\npresented by Keith Simon with Salas O’Brien \nModern high-performance building enclosures utilize control layers to manage heat\, air\, water\, and vapor transport through walls\, roofs\, waterproofing\, and fenestration. This presentation will provide an introduction to the building science of these key four phenomena of building physics\, the mechanism for how they work\, and strategies for controlling their transport in assemblies. The goal of this presentation is that each participant will be able to identify how common building materials (e.g. water resistive barriers\, air barriers\, insulation\, curtain wall\, concrete\, etc.) are able to control air\, heat\, water\, and vapor and describe which metrics are used to quantify those movements. These metrics will be shown in the context of the requirements of common buildings codes and industry standards. Recent building science research will be shared along with developments and upcoming changes to these metrics. \nLearning Objectives \n\n\nDescribe the mechanisms of heat\, air\, bulk water\, and vapor and how they transport through building assemblies.\nQuantify the importance of air barriers and common challenges with their installation that leads to poor performance\, increased energy use and moisture related damage.\nSpecify the use and identify proper materials to provide continuous insulation to increase energy performance and get to Net Zero.\nIdentify key strategies for achieving durable\, energy-efficient\, and thermally comfortable wall\, roof\, and below-grade assemblies through proper design\, installation and testing.\n\n1 LU/HSW(pending) \n\n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas. \nInterdisciplinary: architects\, engineers\, contractors\, building owners\, consultants\, facility managers\, code officials\, educators\, manufacturers\, and those with a stake in building enclosure performance \nExchange of information: discussion\, training\, education\, outreach\, and awareness \nBuilding enclosures and related science: energy-efficiency\, moisture control\, indoor air quality\, longevity\, and durability \nBEC: Austin typically meets the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm. To receive reminders\, please sign up for the BEC mailing list here.\n2026 BEC: Austin Committee\nChair: Michael Salinas\, AIA\nChair Elect: John Byrd\, AIA\nAIA Austin staff liaison: Julia Brown

SUMMARY:AIA Austin WiA Presents Site Tour // 01: HouseMade
DESCRIPTION:AIA Austin WiA Present Site Tour // 01: HouseMade\nDate: Thursday\, April 23\, 2026 at 4:00 – 6:00pm\nLocation: Near MLK & Airport Blvd \nRegister Now! \nNO PPE Required. Rideshare is encouraged. \n2 LU/HSW Credits \nSite Tour Description \nThis tour presents an Architect-built house that showcases design strategies for deep sustainability\, inspired by its wooded east Austin site. Owners\, as designer\, contractor\, and partial builder\, will walk through the design drivers\, unique process of construction\, and end results that feature rammed earth walls\, a courtyard center\, terracing landscapes including a green roof\, and emphasis on material repurposing. The ~2\,600 sf family house is both a thick-walled quiet oasis and life hub\, demonstrating a strong street presence\, expansive interiors\, and more generous public than private spaces. \nThe Austin Energy Green Building consultant for the project will outline the single family rating process from project submission through\, design\, construction\, and final rating and explain how rating a project helps architects to organize their sustainable and regenerative project goals\, incorporate them into their designs and specifications\, and ensure that what is designed and specified ends up in the final project. \nSite Tour Presenters \n \nLauren Woodward Stanley\, AIA brings together design\, advocacy\, academic engagement\, writing\, community service\, and art in an architectural practice rooted in awareness of context and layered disciplines.  She is joint owner and director of Stanley Studio\, a hybrid Austin design practice\, with Lars Stanley\, FAIA\, since 2005.  Their architecture studio and metal arts shop produce award-winning civic\, institutional\, residential\, public art\, and accessory/detail\, a full range of scales with a focus on crafted detail\, material expression\, low-carbon construction\, ecological health\, and social connection.  A UTSOA M.Arch graduate\, Lauren worked for close to a decade in notable Seattle design firms before returning to Austin with a strong ethic championing the integration of buildings and sites.  Her design work and civic engagement is grounded in weaving green infrastructure into the built fabric to produce healthy and socially resilient cities. \n \nLars A. Stanley\, FAIA has practiced architecture since 1983. As both architect and artisan\, he translates his craft and passion for the process of making into creating resonant places. His award-winning work conveys a profound sense of the human hand and a sensitivity to material and craft. Stanley Studio\, the east Austin studio and shop practice he shares with Lauren Woodward Stanley\, issues architectural and metalwork projects at a wide range of types and scales\, from campus master planning to construction detail. Their work includes schools\, libraries\, residences\, parks\, spas\, public amenities\, public art\, architectural accessories\, lighting\, and furniture\, much of it having become part of the urban fabric of Austin. \n \nCatherine Lee Doar is Austin Energy Green Building residential team’s Utility Strategist. For twelve years she served as the Design Coordinator at Austin Habitat for Humanity\, developing their green building program and advising Habitat’s U.S. office on green building initiatives. After twelve years at Austin Energy\, she is serving single family custom and volume customers as well as multifamily teams and leads special projects. Lee has a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Virginia\, and she is passionate about promoting strategic shading in hot climates with a new interest in promoting retrofits in hot places that used to be cool.
