We are air-conditioning much more than just 10 years ago\, to say nothing of a generation ago. This global shift needs to be reflected in our architecture. Why are today’s technology-based Green building programs giving “cover” to architecture that is NOT responsive enough to climate change? What is needed in our approach to architecture in the 21st century to truly lower our carbon footprint? What paradigm shifts in user expectations\, knowledge\, and even aesthetic tastes are necessary to get us to where we need to be? \nLearning Objective 1:\nDescribe the citizen volunteer effort behind Energy Star and the resulting paradigm shift that spawned the international Green building movement and it’s impact on the built environment. \nLearning Objective 2:\nQuestion the effectiveness of present-day approaches and incentives to Sustainability and Resilience in the built environment. \nLearning Objective 3:\nRecognize how to effectively lower your carbon footprint utilizing common-sense strategies employable by those from every socio-economic background. \nLearning Objective 4:\nEnable citizens & community leaders to think beyond the current sustainability paradigm to improve future outcomes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1 LU/HSW\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter:\nPeter Pfeiffer\, FAIA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Pfeiffer is an Architect\, Author\, Building Scientist\, Realtor & Property Manager who is among the earliest American architects to be named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects for his life-long achievements in developing high-performance green design & building strategies.  He was instrumental in the creation of Energy Star\, and then the nation’s very first nationally recognized Green Building program.  Peter is the founding shareholder of Barley | Pfeiffer Architecture\, whose work has been published in such diverse venues as the Washington Post\, Fine Homebuilding and featured on The Discovery Channel and This Old House.  Residential Architect magazine cited him as one of the ten most influential residential architects of the decade.  Peter is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences on architecture\, building development\, and climate change.  As such\, he has been nominated for the prestigious Hanley Award for his meaningful efforts to advance green building in North America.  He has been honored as the “National Green Advocate of the Year” by the National Association of Homes Builders and named the” Green Superhero of the Year” recently at the International Building Show.  More recently he has been selected to speak at the prestigious SXSW conference addressing how architectural design decisions interact with climate & social action. \nRegister Now \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas. \nInterdisciplinary: architects\, engineers\, contractors\, building owners\, consultants\, facility managers\, code officials\, educators\, manufacturers\, and those with a stake in building enclosure performance \nExchange of information: discussion\, training\, education\, outreach\, and awareness \nBuilding enclosures and related science: energy-efficiency\, moisture control\, indoor air quality\, longevity\, and durability \nBEC: Austin typically meets the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm. SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:BEC:Austin will host their monthly meeting and presentation including lunch at the AIA Austin Center.\nLunch sponsored by PROSOCO. \nSealant Durability as a Factor in Litigation\n \nSealant is used on every building\, and used wrong on most of them. From product selection to installation to maintenance\, ignorance about exterior wall and window sealant joints (i.e.\, vertical joints) leads to countless premature failures; therefore\, durability is a central factor in construction litigation. There is also an epidemic of premature horizontal sealant joint failures throughout the United States; they are more prevalent than vertical sealant joint failures. In addition to the usual problems like leakage\, horizontal joint failures can result in personal injury from trip and fall incidents. In many cases\, there are unrealistic expectations of how long a sealant should\nserve its intended purpose – its design life. On the other side\, mistakes shorten the sealant’s functional performance – its service life.\nTo bridge this knowledge gap\, this presentation will synthesize a practical understanding of sealant durability based on theoretical behavior\, observations from numerous failure case studies\, and research and test results from The Durability Lab\, with the following learning objectives:\n1. Understand factors that affect initial performance.\n2. Understand factors that affect durability.\n3. Understand laboratory and field test methods that provide meaningful results.\n4. Understand project variables that affect product selection. \n1 LU credit \nRegister Now\nAbout the presenter: \nDavid H. Nicastro\, P.E.\, F.ASTM\nSenior Principal\nBuilding Diagnostics\, Inc.\, An ABB Company\nDNicastro@ABBae.com\nDavid H. Nicastro\, P.E.\, F.ASTM\, is a licensed professional engineer specializing in durability and failure causation theory. He analyzes existing buildings and designs remedies. He is the founder of Building Diagnostics and Engineering Diagnostics\, which grew to be an Inc. 500 firm by 2000. He also founded The Durability Lab\, a testing center housed at The University of Texas at Austin to study the durability of building components\, identifying factors causing premature failure. Mr. Nicastro is the past chairman of ASTM Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants\, and has published over 50 articles and books on durability and failure of building materials. \n \n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas.
