SUMMARY:Design Voice Community Design Workshop: Magdalene House
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a DesignVoice Community Design Workshop! \nCome help us design expanded housing for Magdalene House\, a survivor-led community for adult women who have survived sex trafficking. This project is a partnership between AIA Austin DesignVoice and HomeAid Austin. Everyone is welcome; no particular experience is required! \nThis is a great opportunity to contribute to building a more equitable and compassionate Austin with a one-time volunteer activity! It might be just two hours\, but it makes a HUGE difference for the client organizations. There are additional ways to get more involved too\, just ask! \nRSVPs are requested so we know how many participants to plan for. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to aiadesignvoice@gmail.com\, or check out our FAQ below! \n\nFAQ\nWhat is a Community Design Workshop?\nWhen DesignVoice runs a Community Design Workshop (also called a “charrette”)\, it is an interactive activity where participants can get directly involved with generating design ideas that will directly benefit a nonprofit or other community organization. \nWhat happens at a Community Design Workshop?\nParticipants are introduced to the project and the design problem to be solved\, and to the mission and vision of the organization we are helping. Then\, the participants form teams to work on creative activities led by the facilitators. The activities are different based on the different projects\, but might include reacting to images\, making collages\, organizing blocks into diagrams\, drawing and making models of design ideas\, or writing concepts. \nDo I need to be an architect to participate?\nNO! The benefit of a Community Design Workshop is that people from different backgrounds and with different experiences come together. We need experts in all aspects of the life of buildings and cities. If you’ve ever lived in a building or a town or a city\, then you are an expert in using buildings and the influences of a place on you\, and we want your expertise! \nWhat if I can’t draw?\nNo skills or experience are required! This is much more about IDEAS than anything else\, and there are always multiple ways to contribute. So don’t worry about needing to draw or needing any specific experience. You’ll also usually be working in groups\, so there’s always the ability to rely on the skills your team members bring to the table.
