SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join BEC: Austin for their monthly meeting featuring a presentation and lunch. \nBuilding Enclosure Control Layer Fundamentals\npresented by Keith Simon with Salas O’Brien \nModern high-performance building enclosures utilize control layers to manage heat\, air\, water\, and vapor transport through walls\, roofs\, waterproofing\, and fenestration. This presentation will provide an introduction to the building science of these key four phenomena of building physics\, the mechanism for how they work\, and strategies for controlling their transport in assemblies. The goal of this presentation is that each participant will be able to identify how common building materials (e.g. water resistive barriers\, air barriers\, insulation\, curtain wall\, concrete\, etc.) are able to control air\, heat\, water\, and vapor and describe which metrics are used to quantify those movements. These metrics will be shown in the context of the requirements of common buildings codes and industry standards. Recent building science research will be shared along with developments and upcoming changes to these metrics. \nLearning Objectives \n\n\nDescribe the mechanisms of heat\, air\, bulk water\, and vapor and how they transport through building assemblies.\nQuantify the importance of air barriers and common challenges with their installation that leads to poor performance\, increased energy use and moisture related damage.\nSpecify the use and identify proper materials to provide continuous insulation to increase energy performance and get to Net Zero.\nIdentify key strategies for achieving durable\, energy-efficient\, and thermally comfortable wall\, roof\, and below-grade assemblies through proper design\, installation and testing.\n\n1 LU/HSW(pending) \n\n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas. \nInterdisciplinary: architects\, engineers\, contractors\, building owners\, consultants\, facility managers\, code officials\, educators\, manufacturers\, and those with a stake in building enclosure performance \nExchange of information: discussion\, training\, education\, outreach\, and awareness \nBuilding enclosures and related science: energy-efficiency\, moisture control\, indoor air quality\, longevity\, and durability \nBEC: Austin typically meets the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm. To receive reminders\, please sign up for the BEC mailing list here.\n2026 BEC: Austin Committee\nChair: Michael Salinas\, AIA\nChair Elect: John Byrd\, AIA\nAIA Austin staff liaison: Julia Brown

SUMMARY:Design Austin | PechaKucha #41
DESCRIPTION:PechaKucha is an informal gathering where creative people get together and share their ideas\, works\, thoughts\, and just about anything. \nPECHAKUCHA AUSTIN #41\nThursday\, May 7\, 2026\nAustin History Center// 800 Guadalupe \n7:00PM Doors\, 8:20PM Program Begins \nDon’t miss this incredible night of creative storytelling featuring leading Austin-based architects\, designers\, musicians\, writers\, and artists at the Austin History Center\, the local history archive of the Austin Public Library. \nPechaKucha\, which roughly translates to “chit-chat” in Japanese\, is a creative speaking event that originated in Tokyo in 2003. The unique format\, a kind of speed-dating version of a TED Talk\, invites 10 guest speakers to each develop a presentation on a creative topic within the strict parameters of 20 slides (image slots) and 20 seconds per slide. The slides are set on a timer out of the control of the presenters\, so the cumulative effect of 10 short presentations\, just over six minutes each\, leads to a fast and furious evening of entertainment and creative inspiration. \nPechaKucha is presented in collaboration with The Austin History Center Association\, Design Austin and DJ Stout\, Austin-based graphic designer\, Pentagram Partner\, Principal of Pentagram’s Austin office\, and Co-Director of PechaKucha Austin. \nPechaKucha Austin #41 Lineup and Order\n1 Jennifer Chenoweth (AHC Manager)\n2 Stephanie and Ryan Lemmo (Architects)\n3 Michael Barnes (Historian)\n4 Ian Searcy (Magazine Designer)\n5 Will van Overbeek (Photographer) \nB R E A K \n6 Emily Schexnayder (Entrepreneur)\n7 Alan Lazarus (Vespaio Founder)\n8 Angelique Ferrao (Painter)\n9 Jim Franklin (Poster Artist)\n10 Miles Zuniga (Musician)
