SUMMARY:AIA Austin WiA Presents Site Tour // 01: HouseMade
DESCRIPTION:AIA Austin WiA Present Site Tour // 01: HouseMade\nDate: Thursday\, April 23\, 2026 at 4:00 – 6:00pm\nLocation: Near MLK & Airport Blvd \nRegister Now! \nNO PPE Required. Rideshare is encouraged. \n2 CEU Credits PENDING. \nSite Tour Description \nThis tour presents an Architect-built house that showcases design strategies for deep sustainability\, inspired by its wooded east Austin site. Owners\, as designer\, contractor\, and partial builder\, will walk through the design drivers\, unique process of construction\, and end results that feature rammed earth walls\, a courtyard center\, terracing landscapes including a green roof\, and emphasis on material repurposing. The ~2\,600 sf family house is both a thick-walled quiet oasis and life hub\, demonstrating a strong street presence\, expansive interiors\, and more generous public than private spaces. \nThe Austin Energy Green Building consultant for the project will outline the single family rating process from project submission through\, design\, construction\, and final rating and explain how rating a project helps architects to organize their sustainable and regenerative project goals\, incorporate them into their designs and specifications\, and ensure that what is designed and specified ends up in the final project. \nSite Tour Presenters \n \nLauren Woodward Stanley\, AIA brings together design\, advocacy\, academic engagement\, writing\, community service\, and art in an architectural practice rooted in awareness of context and layered disciplines.  She is joint owner and director of Stanley Studio\, a hybrid Austin design practice\, with Lars Stanley\, FAIA\, since 2005.  Their architecture studio and metal arts shop produce award-winning civic\, institutional\, residential\, public art\, and accessory/detail\, a full range of scales with a focus on crafted detail\, material expression\, low-carbon construction\, ecological health\, and social connection.  A UTSOA M.Arch graduate\, Lauren worked for close to a decade in notable Seattle design firms before returning to Austin with a strong ethic championing the integration of buildings and sites.  Her design work and civic engagement is grounded in weaving green infrastructure into the built fabric to produce healthy and socially resilient cities. \n \nLars A. Stanley\, FAIA has practiced architecture since 1983. As both architect and artisan\, he translates his craft and passion for the process of making into creating resonant places. His award-winning work conveys a profound sense of the human hand and a sensitivity to material and craft. Stanley Studio\, the east Austin studio and shop practice he shares with Lauren Woodward Stanley\, issues architectural and metalwork projects at a wide range of types and scales\, from campus master planning to construction detail. Their work includes schools\, libraries\, residences\, parks\, spas\, public amenities\, public art\, architectural accessories\, lighting\, and furniture\, much of it having become part of the urban fabric of Austin. \n \nCatherine Lee Doar is Austin Energy Green Building residential team’s Utility Strategist. For twelve years she served as the Design Coordinator at Austin Habitat for Humanity\, developing their green building program and advising Habitat’s U.S. office on green building initiatives. After twelve years at Austin Energy\, she is serving single family custom and volume customers as well as multifamily teams and leads special projects. Lee has a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Virginia\, and she is passionate about promoting strategic shading in hot climates with a new interest in promoting retrofits in hot places that used to be cool.

SUMMARY:From Principles to Policy: How Urban Designers Shape the Public Realm
DESCRIPTION:From Principles to Policy: How Urban Designers Shape the Public Realm\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat does it look like when architects and urban designers work not for clients\, but for cities — and for the people who live in them? This session draws on the work of New York City’s urban design practice to explore how public-sector design can be a powerful force for health\, equity\, and resilience. Through real-world case studies from one of the most complex urban environments in the world\, participants will examine the principles and tools that NYC planners use to shape livable neighborhoods\, equitable public spaces\, and streets that serve all users. Architects working in Austin and across Texas will leave with frameworks they can apply to their own civic contexts\, whether engaging with local planning agencies\, advocating for design quality\, or contributing to neighborhood and corridor studies. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify at least three urban design principles used by NYC’s Department of City Planning\, such as walkability\, ground-floor activation\, and public realm continuity\, and evaluate how each principle protects or enhances the safety and welfare of building occupants and street-level users within their local context.\nAnalyze case studies from NYC’s urban design practice to distinguish which design strategies have the greatest measurable impact on equitable access and community health outcomes\, using the examples presented as a comparative framework.\nApply public-sector urban design decision-making frameworks\, including zoning tools\, design guidelines\, and corridor studies\, to assess how similar approaches could improve health\, safety\, and welfare outcomes in an Austin or Texas context.\nDescribe how co-located\, interdisciplinary urban design units within city planning agencies function as a governance model\, and explain how that model enables long-term design vision that consistently centers the health\, safety\, and welfare of occupants of the built environment.\n\nLocation TBD.\n1 LU/HSW (pending)\nRegistration coming soon

SUMMARY:Design Austin | PechaKucha #41
DESCRIPTION:PechaKucha is an informal gathering where creative people get together and share their ideas\, works\, thoughts\, and just about anything. \nPECHAKUCHA AUSTIN #41\nThursday\, May 7\, 2026\nAustin History Center// 810 Guadalupe \n7:00PM Doors\, 8:20PM Program Begins \nDon’t miss this incredible night of creative storytelling featuring leading Austin-based architects\, designers\, musicians\, writers\, and artists at the Austin History Center\, the local history archive of the Austin Public Library. \nPechaKucha\, which roughly translates to “chit-chat” in Japanese\, is a creative speaking event that originated in Tokyo in 2003. The unique format\, a kind of speed-dating version of a TED Talk\, invites 10 guest speakers to each develop a presentation on a creative topic within the strict parameters of 20 slides (image slots) and 20 seconds per slide. The slides are set on a timer out of the control of the presenters\, so the cumulative effect of 10 short presentations\, just over six minutes each\, leads to a fast and furious evening of entertainment and creative inspiration. \nPechaKucha is presented in collaboration with The Austin History Center Association\, Design Austin and DJ Stout\, Austin-based graphic designer\, Pentagram Partner\, Principal of Pentagram’s Austin office\, and Co-Director of PechaKucha Austin. \nPechaKucha Austin #41 Lineup and Order\n1 Jennifer Chenoweth (AHC Manager)\n2 Stephanie and Ryan Lemmo (Architects)\n3 Michael Barnes (Historian)\n4 Julie Savasky (Book Designer)\n5 Will van Overbeek (Photographer) \nB R E A K \n6 Emily Schexnayder (Entrepreneur)\n7 Alan Lazarus (Vespaio Founder)\n8 Angelique Ferrao (Painter)\n9 Jim Franklin (Poster Artist)\n10 Miles Zuniga (Musician)
