DESCRIPTION:Each month\, the AIA Austin Advocacy Roundtable brings together professionals to discuss strategies individual professionals\, practices\, and AIA Austin can take to proactively advocate for issues important to our members and the larger community. This month’s roundtable brings together practitioners with direct experience delivering Missing Middle housing\, ranging from three-unit HOME developments to small multifamily buildings\, for a candid discussion of the lessons they learned. \nThe conversation will be grounded in real world insights: what worked\, what didn’t\, and what surprised them. Topics will include the practical challenges specific to these typologies\, such as parking strategies\, trash and utility servicing\, attached vs. detached configurations\, shared tenant space design\, building management\, and how these projects actually perform in the market. Keith Mars\, Director of Austin Development Services\, will join the panel\, bringing a regulatory and review-process perspective alongside the practitioners’ on-the-ground experience. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify site planning and unit configuration strategies\, including parking\, utility access\, trash service\, and attached versus detached arrangements\, that have proven effective in the design and permitting of small-scale multifamily housing in Austin.\nAnalyze the regulatory and permitting constraints most commonly encountered in 3-to-20 unit residential projects\, drawing on practitioner experience and the perspective of Austin’s Development Services Department.\nCompare the design and management challenges associated with shared tenant spaces\, building operations\, and market reception across missing middle housing typologies\, using case studies from Austin practitioners.\nApply lessons learned from built and unbuilt missing middle projects to identify creative solutions and anticipate common obstacles in future small-scale multifamily design and development.\n\nBring your lunch and join us!\n1.5 LU/HSW (pending). $5 AIA members /$20 non-members\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join BEC: Austin for their monthly meeting featuring a presentation and lunch. \nBuilding Enclosure Control Layer Fundamentals\npresented by Keith Simon with Salas O’Brien \nModern high-performance building enclosures utilize control layers to manage heat\, air\, water\, and vapor transport through walls\, roofs\, waterproofing\, and fenestration. This presentation will provide an introduction to the building science of these key four phenomena of building physics\, the mechanism for how they work\, and strategies for controlling their transport in assemblies. The goal of this presentation is that each participant will be able to identify how common building materials (e.g. water resistive barriers\, air barriers\, insulation\, curtain wall\, concrete\, etc.) are able to control air\, heat\, water\, and vapor and describe which metrics are used to quantify those movements. These metrics will be shown in the context of the requirements of common buildings codes and industry standards. Recent building science research will be shared along with developments and upcoming changes to these metrics. \nLearning Objectives \n\n\nDescribe the mechanisms of heat\, air\, bulk water\, and vapor and how they transport through building assemblies.\nQuantify the importance of air barriers and common challenges with their installation that leads to poor performance\, increased energy use and moisture related damage.\nSpecify the use and identify proper materials to provide continuous insulation to increase energy performance and get to Net Zero.\nIdentify key strategies for achieving durable\, energy-efficient\, and thermally comfortable wall\, roof\, and below-grade assemblies through proper design\, installation and testing.\n\n1 LU/HSW(pending) \n\n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas. \nInterdisciplinary: architects\, engineers\, contractors\, building owners\, consultants\, facility managers\, code officials\, educators\, manufacturers\, and those with a stake in building enclosure performance \nExchange of information: discussion\, training\, education\, outreach\, and awareness \nBuilding enclosures and related science: energy-efficiency\, moisture control\, indoor air quality\, longevity\, and durability \nBEC: Austin typically meets the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm. DESCRIPTION:The Urban Design Committee’s 2026 Speaker Series will focus on smaller scale development and projects that transform underutilized spaces at the neighborhood scale\, demonstrate creativity in adaptive reuse and inform a sense of place. \nNext up in our series will be Ben Dimmitt of Chioco Design who will share more about their vision and process for the redevelopment of the former warehouse at 979 Springdale into a community anchor and neighborhood hub that serves as the home of the Austin Bouldering Project\, Groundfloor Theater and others.
