SUMMARY:Principals Breakfast: Design as Narrative
DESCRIPTION:Start your morning with breakfast\, connection\, and a crucial conversation with AIA Austin leaders and your peers. This event is open to Architecture Firm Principals only please\, registration required.\n\nDesign as Narrative: Visual Storytelling Strategies for Architects\nGreat design always tells a story\, but communicating that story clearly and convincingly requires more than the standard-issue drawings and jargon-laden text. As an architectural communications consultant for over 15 years\, Richie Gelles draws upon his professional experience working hand in glove with the world’s leading architects and designers\, translating their groundbreaking design projects into visually engaging\, story-driven presentations. Through real-world examples and behind-the-scenes insights\, this course explores how to distill complex architectural ideas into accessible narratives and effective visuals that emphasize key design concepts and resonate with diverse audiences. Attendees will gain practical strategies for shaping the story behind their work\, foregrounding key design concepts\, clarifying intent\, building emotional impact\, and aligning message with medium and audience\, whether for government approvals\, competition entries\, client presentations\, or public engagement.\n\n\nSpeaker \n\n\nRichie Gelles is an architectural communications consultant based in Austin\, Texas. He is the founder and creative director of Playhou.se Animation\, a studio specializing in architectural visualization and narrative-driven animations for the built environment. With over 15 years of experience\, Gelles has collaborated with some of the world’s leading architects and designers including OMA\, BIG\, Sasaki\, ARUP\, MVRDV\, Henning Larsen\, James Corner Field Operations\, SWA and Grant Associates to translate complex design concepts into compelling visual narratives that resonate with diverse audiences\, including government agencies\, competition juries\, and the general public.\nRichie studied architecture at Rice University\, where he developed a strong foundation in design and a passion for visual storytelling. He also teaches design studio and animation at the university level having taught graduate and undergraduate level courses at the University of Pennsylvania\,  Texas A&M University and Chuhai College in Hong Kong\, as well as workshops focusing on integrating animation into the design process at Harvard GSD\, Chinese University of Hong Kong\, Syracuse University and University of Coventry.\n\nThank you to our Sponsors

SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join BEC: Austin for their monthly meeting featuring a presentation and lunch. \nREGISTER NOW \nPrefabricated Exterior Wall Assemblies: Herding Cats in Hard Hats \n \nPrefabrication of exterior wall assemblies has been explored since the 1920s and 1930s\, so the concept of their use is nothing new to the built environment. However\, consideration of the effects on the air\, water\, and thermal boundaries of buildings are the concerns of the construction industry for the 21st century. No matter if the wall assembly is constructed in the field or in a shop\, it must have continuity in their air\, water\, and thermal barriers. Prefabricated exterior wall assemblies are designed and constructed to meet these requirements. In this presentation\, our goal will be to introduce two perspectives on the use of prefabricated exterior wall assemblies. One is the General Contractor’s experience with prefabricated exterior wall assemblies and the delegated design process. The other is the experience of the building enclosure consultant reviewing the design and observing the fabrication and erection of these wall systems. Case studies will be reviewed with respect to code and/or industry association inspection requirements\, design and construction reviews\, and lessons learned in the coordination of these assemblies with other trades. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDescribe the history and different types of prefabricated exterior wall panels.\nContracting and coordinating the delegated design process with the applicable trade partners. Turn-Key\, Means & Methods\, and discuss who owns the details.\nApplicable codes and standards. Explore how to test and inspect these assemblies.\nDemonstrate the process of designing and construction of the prefabricated exterior wall assembly and how it incorporates the air\, thermal and water barriers within it.\n\n1 LU/HSW \nREGISTER NOW \nSpeakers\nKayla Maines and Howard Colton with Terracon\, and Trevor Brown with JE Dunn. \n \n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas. \nInterdisciplinary: architects\, engineers\, contractors\, building owners\, consultants\, facility managers\, code officials\, educators\, manufacturers\, and those with a stake in building enclosure performance \nExchange of information: discussion\, training\, education\, outreach\, and awareness \nBuilding enclosures and related science: energy-efficiency\, moisture control\, indoor air quality\, longevity\, and durability \nBEC: Austin typically meets the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm.
