SUMMARY:Design Austin | Design Minded: Joey Zeledón
DESCRIPTION:Design Austin is dedicated to celebrating the impact of design in our city and beyond through engaging events\, exhibitions\, and collaborations. Design Minded is an event series created in partnership with The Contemporary Austin. Join us on their downtown Moody Rooftop for inspiring film screenings\, thought-provoking talks\, and to meet other design-minded creatives. \nThis fall\, the series continues on Wednesday\, October 15 with a design talk by Joey Zeledón (he/they/she). They will explore the transformative nature of design through the lens of their personal experience as a trans designer. Drawing from nearly two decades as an industrial designer designing shoes\, furniture\, housewares\, tech and more\, Joey will examine how both design and trans identity involve iterative processes of expressing an authentic identity through visual and physical forms and challenge conventional boundaries\, creating new ways of engaging with the world. Joey will show how design is a universal language for navigating change and expressing our authentic selves through life and all its transitions. Design can help us make sense of ourselves\, no matter who we are or how we identify. \nThe AIA Austin LGTBQIA+ Alliance will join us for this event as our community partner and facilitate a Q&A following the talk. Meet the co-chairs Sarah Biesterveld and John Stenzel and learn about upcoming committee events. “Our mission is to preserve and celebrate queer space while supporting LGBTQIA+ designers in Austin and beyond. We aim to create a safe environment for conversation\, build community\, and foster diversity and inclusion within our profession and organization” \nSchedule for the evening: \n\n6:30P: Rooftop seating & bar opens\n7P: Design talk by Joey Zeledón\n7:30P-8:15P: Q&A facilitated by Sarah Biesterveld and John Stenzel\, co-chairs of AIA Austin LGTBQIA+ Alliance\n\nTickets include access to view the exhibitions on view\, complimentary drinks\, and admission to the rooftop event. Feel free to arrive early to view the galleries. \nThe museum and rooftop are wheelchair accessible and there will be a designated mobility assisted seating area in the front row. If you need additional accommodation requests\, please email salexander@thecontemporaryaustin.org.

SUMMARY:WiA Book Club 03 // Places of the Heart: The Psychogeography of Everyday Life by Colin Ellard
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for AIA Austin WiA’s Book Club! \nAIA Austin WiA third and last read of this year will be Places of the Heart: The Psychogeography of Everyday Life by Colin Ellard is a compelling exploration into how the spaces we inhabit—our homes\, workplaces\, cities\, and nature—shape our emotions\, thoughts\, and bodily responses. Drawing from neuroscience and environmental psychology\, Ellard illustrates how design elements in places like parks\, churches\, casinos\, or shopping malls trigger feelings ranging from awe and relaxation to anxiety and temptation. SUMMARY:Urban Design Committee: Old Red River & More!
DESCRIPTION:Old Red River Street & More! \nUrban design is all about shaping great public spaces for a better human experience. Sometimes this happens in the right-of-way and when you are lucky\, you get to repurpose old streets into new outdoor places to enhance adjacent uses\, create better connectivity\, and provide a gathering place for people to be together. \nPlease join us Wednesday\, Sept 24th at Noon for our Urban Design Committee meeting. We will dive into the Old Red River Street placemaking project – an incredible opportunity to reuse public right-of-way between 12th and 15th Streets to enhance functions at Waterloo Park and connect to the UT campus. Projects like these don’t happen without great planning\, advocacy\, and appropriate funding for implementation. Come learn about the current plans and how to get involved. RSVP HERE>> \nWe have an exciting panel joining us for this discussion\, including:\nAnne Milne\, City of Austin Project Lead\nVeronica Castro de Barrera\, AIA\, University of Texas Lead Campus & Mobility Planner\nJana McCann\, FAIA\, and Ted Siff\, Austin Outside \nWe will learn how Red River Street has been realigned back to its historic alignment after two separate changes made with the University of Texas to support its mission and needs over time. As UT’s Campus Master Plan evolves and is implemented\, we will continue to see UT’s investment near Old Red River Street. \nWe will also learn how Austin Outside values public places and connection to nature. And\, why they believe that greater access to vibrant\, robust\, community-wide network of parks\, trails\, bike lanes\, sidewalks\, open spaces and protected areas is essential to the social\, mental\, physical\, ecological\, and economic health of greater Austin. \nThis meeting will be in-person at the AIA Austin office at 801 W 12th Street. Lunch will be provided. A virtual option will also be available. \n\nAll are welcome to the Urban Design Committee meetings. Information provided to our mailing list. Sign up for our mailing list here! \n\nHYBRID; 4th Wednesday of each month at 12:00 PM \nThe AIA Austin Urban Design Committee aims to improve the quality of the urban environment by promoting excellence in design\, planning\, and public policy in the built environment. The Urban Design Committee\, in concert with allied community and professional groups\, promotes programs that teach and inform professionals and the public about the design and development of quality urban spaces and environments.
