SUMMARY:From Principles to Policy: How Urban Designers Shape the Public Realm
DESCRIPTION:From Principles to Policy: How Urban Designers Shape the Public Realm\n\nWhat does it look like when architects and urban designers work not for clients\, but for cities — and for the people who live in them? This session draws on the work of New York City’s urban design practice to explore how public-sector design can be a powerful force for health\, equity\, and resilience. Through real-world case studies from one of the most complex urban environments in the world\, participants will examine the principles and tools that NYC planners use to shape livable neighborhoods\, equitable public spaces\, and streets that serve all users. Architects working in Austin and across Texas will leave with frameworks they can apply to their own civic contexts\, whether engaging with local planning agencies\, advocating for design quality\, or contributing to neighborhood and corridor studies.\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Sagi Golan\, Associate AIA\n\nDeputy Director of Urban Design\, NYC DCP \nSagi Golan is an architect and urban designer serving as the Deputy Director of Urban Design at the New York City Department of City Planning\, where he leads the design vision and public realm frameworks for major neighborhood plans across the five boroughs. His work operates at the intersection of architecture\, city form\, and public policy\, focusing on translating core urban design principles into zoning tools\, design guidelines\, and strategies that shape how buildings meet the street\, how public spaces function\, and how large-scale development contributes to a cohesive and equitable urban fabric. Sagi will present a case study of Brooklyn’s Gowanus District to explore how public-sector design can be a powerful force for health\, equity\, and resilience. \nIn addition to his public-sector leadership\, Golan teaches graduate urban design at Columbia University’s GSAPP\, coordinating studios that explore urban systems\, climate resiliency\, environmental justice\, and narrative methods. Through his combined practice\, teaching\, and public engagement\, he advances design as both a regulatory framework and a creative instrument for shaping dynamic and accessible environments. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify at least three urban design principles used by NYC’s Department of City Planning\, such as walkability\, ground-floor activation\, and public realm continuity\, and evaluate how each principle protects or enhances the safety and welfare of building occupants and street-level users within their local context.\nAnalyze case studies from NYC’s urban design practice to distinguish which design strategies have the greatest measurable impact on equitable access and community health outcomes\, using the examples presented as a comparative framework.\nApply public-sector urban design decision-making frameworks\, including zoning tools\, design guidelines\, and corridor studies\, to assess how similar approaches could improve health\, safety\, and welfare outcomes in an Austin or Texas context.\nDescribe how co-located\, interdisciplinary urban design units within city planning agencies function as a governance model\, and explain how that model enables long-term design vision that consistently centers the health\, safety\, and welfare of occupants of the built environment.\n\nLocation: Austin Community College Rio Grande Campus (Multipurpose Room)\n1 LU/HSW\nRegister Here \nReception generously sponsored by Texans for Housing

SUMMARY:Urban Design Committee: Old Red River & More!
DESCRIPTION:Old Red River Street & More! \nUrban design is all about shaping great public spaces for a better human experience. Sometimes this happens in the right-of-way and when you are lucky\, you get to repurpose old streets into new outdoor places to enhance adjacent uses\, create better connectivity\, and provide a gathering place for people to be together. \nPlease join us Wednesday\, Sept 24th at Noon for our Urban Design Committee meeting. We will dive into the Old Red River Street placemaking project – an incredible opportunity to reuse public right-of-way between 12th and 15th Streets to enhance functions at Waterloo Park and connect to the UT campus. Projects like these don’t happen without great planning\, advocacy\, and appropriate funding for implementation. Come learn about the current plans and how to get involved. RSVP HERE>> \nWe have an exciting panel joining us for this discussion\, including:\nAnne Milne\, City of Austin Project Lead\nVeronica Castro de Barrera\, AIA\, University of Texas Lead Campus & Mobility Planner\nJana McCann\, FAIA\, and Ted Siff\, Austin Outside \nWe will learn how Red River Street has been realigned back to its historic alignment after two separate changes made with the University of Texas to support its mission and needs over time. As UT’s Campus Master Plan evolves and is implemented\, we will continue to see UT’s investment near Old Red River Street. \nWe will also learn how Austin Outside values public places and connection to nature. And\, why they believe that greater access to vibrant\, robust\, community-wide network of parks\, trails\, bike lanes\, sidewalks\, open spaces and protected areas is essential to the social\, mental\, physical\, ecological\, and economic health of greater Austin. \nThis meeting will be in-person at the AIA Austin office at 801 W 12th Street. Lunch will be provided. A virtual option will also be available. \n\nAll are welcome to the Urban Design Committee meetings. Information provided to our mailing list. Sign up for our mailing list here! \n\nHYBRID; 4th Wednesday of each month at 12:00 PM \nThe AIA Austin Urban Design Committee aims to improve the quality of the urban environment by promoting excellence in design\, planning\, and public policy in the built environment.
