This month\, we are hosting our second annual Loud & Proud Auction benefiting our Hill Country Ride for AIDS (HCRA) cycling team through another fantastic loud and silent auction. Looking for that perfect item for your apartment? Or just a little treat? This event is for you! \nHow to I participate? This is a free event but registration is required. A $5 donation to our ride team via QR code at the door is suggested but not required. \nDid you say loud AND silent auction? Yes\, items will be separated into two bidding categories. A very special guest and friend of the Alliance will be our auctioneer for the evening! We have collected an array of items from local businesses\, including furniture\, lighting\, electronics\, and other goodies — to be revealed at the event! \nWhere do auction funds go? Funds raised during the loud and silent auctions will directly support our Hill Country Ride for AIDS cycling team. \nWhat is the Hill Country Ride for AIDS? The Hill Country Ride for AIDS (HCRA) is a family friendly and festive bike ride through the beautiful hill country that raises funds given directly to nine local nonprofits who help those affected by HIV/AIDS. \nCan’t make it but want to support our team? You can donate to our team at the link here. DESCRIPTION:September 4th from 5:30pm-7:30pm\nRegister for the Happy Hour here!\nWiA and the LGBTQIA+ Alliance are hosting a joint happy hour and maker-event at Andalusia Designs\, a specialty parametric ceiling and wall manufacturer based in Austin\, TX. We’ll receive a tour of Andalusia’s facilities while they fabricate a metal + cork coaster for attendees to take home. \nAnd it wouldn’t be a maker-event without a little creativity! We’re hosting a design competition for the image that will be cut into the coasters during the event! We invite you to submit designs for a coaster that illustrates what a collaboration between WiA and the LGBTQIA+ Alliance means to you. Our shared missions of celebrating\, lifting each other up\, and building community and awareness within the profession can provide inspiration\, and interpretation is up to you. Please download the competition brief here for the design parameters and submission requirements. \nAttendees do not have to submit a design to attend. Design competition submission is open 8/1 – 8/22. Design winners will be announced at the event. DESCRIPTION:LGBTQIA+ Alliance QTOPIA 4 Kids | Tell Your Own Story 2025\nWhen: Saturday August 16\, 10:15AM – 12:15 PM \n\n\nWhere: Birdhouse Books \nJoin us for a morning of zine-making\, self-love\, and a drag queen story time! This event is centered around self-expression and self-trust – no one knows your story better than you! Come celebrate Austin’s Pride month at this all ages event. Registration required\, spots are limited. \nBirdhouse Books opens at 10am and we’ll get started at 10:15. The first hour will be spent crafting individual zines based on the prompt “tell your own story”. Supplies will be provided\, all you need to bring is your story! A zine is a mini story book; it is made out of 1 sheet of paper folded a few times and involves 1 scissor cut – children’s scissors available or an adult can help cut. Materials for filling out your zine includes: crayons\, markers\, pens\, and collage supplies. This craft can be adapted to many different skill levels and ages. \nAfterwards\, the wonderful Holliday Cash will read a few stories (and maybe sing a few songs)! This campy queen will be sure to entertain all ages. Once the stories have wrapped there will be a brief zine show-and-tell\, though it is not required. \nEvery child will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of the books read by Holliday. Each location forms a memory about what it meant to play\, live\, and connect to our community. However\, the loss of these valuable spaces has spurred an increase in loneliness and disconnection from people who are different from us. Dr. Marlon Johnson (Dean of Community Life at Seminary of the Southwest\, Owner of Johnson Counseling and Consulting)\, will join NOMA and the LGBTQIA+ Alliance to explore the concept of Third Spaces and their importance for POC and LGBTQ Wellness. \nWe will do some sketching of our favorite childhood third spaces\, hear a brief lecture of the concept of beloved community through design and development\, and learn more about our opportunities to support and advocate for local and regional community third spaces that are on the rise in the Austin and Central Texas area. \nBYOB – Bring Your Own Blanket (or chair) and sketchbook for an engaging family friendly workshop with Dr. Marlon Johnson. Light refreshments will be provided along with additional sketch materials. There are a limited number of chairs available onsite\, so please bring something to sit on if you are able. DESCRIPTION:When: April 24\, 6-9 PM\nWhere: The Beck Group office – 1401 E 6th St\, Building 1\, suite 500\, Austin TX 78702.  A follow up email will be sent to registrants with directions and parking information. \nDescription: The 3rd installment of our QTOPIA series will benefit our Hill Country Ride for AIDs (HCRA) cycling team through a loud and silent auction and provide community resources through a collaborative zine making activity. \nHow to I participate? This is a free event but registration is required. A suggested donation of $5 at the door benefits our HCRA team. \nWhat is the zine activity? We will be creating pages for a community zine! We’ll have supplies and community resources\, but bring your own thoughts and ideas to contribute. What would you want to see in a community zine? \nDid you say loud AND silent auction? Yes\, items will be separated into two bidding categories. Our very own Tim Peterson will be our loud auctioneer for the evening! We have collected an array of items from local businesses\, including furniture\, lighting\, electronics\, and other goodies! \nWhere do auction funds go? Funds raised during the loud and silent auctions will directly support our Hill Country Ride for AIDS cycling team. \nWhat is the Hill Country Ride for AIDS? We’ll explore important landmarks in Austin’s queer uprising and cherished cultural hubs\, honoring the legacy of spaces we’ve lost and those still at risk. \nThe tour is a 4.5-mile adventure through the city\, celebrating Austin’s most beloved LGBTQIA+ spaces\, landmarks\, and stories—led by some of our favorite designers\, historians\, and friends! The tour will last approximately two and a half hours\, with forty minutes of total bike time and roughly 15 minutes at each stop. \nWe will be making our way downtown and ending at Cheer Up Charlies for a post-tour happy hour! You’ll be able to pop your bike on a rapid bus line to return to our starting point. \nThe tour is BYO Bike\, but if you do not own a bike we recommend renting one from a MetroBike station. Please remember to wear your helmets and bring water. \n$15 registration fee which includes a T-shirt! All sales are final\, and the ride is rain or shine. Spaces are limited so register today! Wigs are not required but are encouraged! Need a ride: We are organizing a vehicle to ride from stop to stop for those unable to bike. DESCRIPTION:AIA Austin WiA and LGBTQIA+Alliance Present: Happy Hour // Coaster Design Competition\nWiA and the LGBTQIA+ Alliance are hosting a joint happy hour and maker-event at Andalusia Designs\, a specialty parametric ceiling and wall manufacturer based in Austin\, TX. We’ll receive a tour of Andalusia’s facilities while they fabricate a metal + cork coaster for attendees to take home. Attendees do not have to submit a design to attend. Design winners will be announced closer to event. Finding spaces where someone can feel safe to be their authentic self can help reinforce the mental and emotional resources needed to navigate racism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, and other forms of violence. This presentation is grounded in bell hooks’ exploration of homeplace with Dr. Johnson’s research about racial trauma and racial healing for queer bodies. Using the Queered Model for Black Identity Development\, Dr. Johnson will help participants to look at architecture and design as an opportunity to help others consider the necessity of belonging in space. Come define your “why” when designing inclusive cultural spaces for all communities involved. \nMarlon Johnson\, PhD\, LPC (TX)\, LPC-MHSP (TN)\, NCC Bio \nDr. Marlon Johnson (He/Him) serves as an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin\, where he prepares individuals to become culturally-inclusive and spiritually-integrated mental health professionals. He is also a licensed professional counselor at his private practice in Austin\, Texas. Dr. Johnson’s clinical work centers Black mental wellness\, queer and trans-inclusive mental healthcare\, and community racial healing activities. He utilizes Narrative and Quare theories to help clients feel seen and safe to explore their identities and experiences within the counseling environment. Dr. Johnson trains students and scholars to think critically about cultural inclusion and advocacy within the realms of  assessment\, career interventions\, and counseling practice.
