SUMMARY:AFA | Design Talks: Sterling E. Stevens in partnership with NOMA of Central Texas
DESCRIPTION:Sterling E. Stevens: “Am I using visual language through photographic medium to distill our built environment\, deconstruct design intent\, and demystify architectural vocabulary—or am I just taking pictures?” \nAbout the Talk: After years of studying and practicing architecture\, Sterling’s foray into photography quickly evolved from picture-taker\, to award-winning fine artist\, to leaving his first career behind to enter the photography field professionally. He’ll discuss how he honed daily observation into a singular visual voice\, finding delight in the ordinary as a photographic artist\, and integrating his philosophies about communicating design into architectural photography. \nPresented by the Austin Foundation for Architecture in partnership with National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Central Texas. Design Talks showcases Austin’s talented designers from all fields. Doors open at 6:00pm and lecture begins at dusk. \nGET TICKETS\n\n \n\nIn 2009\, Sterling E. Stevens seamlessly transitioned from practicing architecture to become a professional photographer and award-winning fine artist.  His curiosity for photography emerged during his design studies in Texas and North Carolina.  A trained aesthetic sensibility\, acute empathy for his surroundings\, and unadulterated joy of the still image contributed to his passion for visually translating the built environment.  Based between San Antonio\, TX and Raleigh\, NC\, Stevens works throughout the southern United States\, collaborating with a diverse array of clients\, blending his artistic eye\, architectural knowledge and situational awareness into dynamic portraits of environmental design. \nThe mission of NOMA of Central Texas is to sustain the legacy of NOMA’S founding members by deepening the visibility\, support of\, and solidarity of under-represented people in the field of architecture and beyond. \n\n\nDesign Talks is presented by the Austin Foundation for Architecture in collaboration with a new design organization each month.

SUMMARY:Design Talks & Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This event serves as the AIA Austin Annual Meeting\, where the 2021 slate of candidates will be elected. The candidates were chosen by the nominating committee led by President Elect Stephi Motal\, AIA\, and will be voted on by the membership beginning on October 10. After the new board is elected\, our speaker will take the stage for the rest of the event. \nArchitecture Centers 2.0: A Journey from Foundation to Center in Chicago \nThe fourth out of five Design Talks for 2020 will be a talk by Lynn Osmond\, President and CEO of Chicago Architecture Center. Originally planned at Austin Central Library\, this event will now be taking place virtually as a Zoom webinar. \nAfter more than 50 years\, the Chicago Architecture Foundation re-emerged in 2018 as the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) with a highly visible\, branded\, museum-quality space and retail operation steps from Michigan Avenue. The Center’s 20\,000 square feet provide the organization with near-limitless possibilities for exhibitions\, pop-up displays\, programs and public engagement. The location\, just above the dock for the CAC’s River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady\, is stunning\, and the build-out makes the most of it by creating a beacon that calls out to Chicagoans and tourists enjoying the Magnificent Mile and Cultural Mile. Beyond the advantages of location and visibility\, the innovative design by AS+GG and the meticulous build-out have transformed overlooked “found” space in the Mies-designed Illinois Center into a custom-built home befitting Chicago’s world-class architectural legacy. Hear from CAC President & CEO Lynn Osmond about the multi-year endeavor to test and refine the Center’s concept\, scout downtown real estate and deliver a facility in service of Chicago and Chicagoans. In the midst of a global pandemic\, learn how the CAC is responding to unprecedented challenges brought by workplace restrictions and a halt in tourism while redefining our partnerships in support of struggling neighborhoods. \nDesign Talks offer 1 LU of continuing education credit for registered attendees (sign-in required). \nTickets are $10. Register in advance for this webinar below. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. All sales final.
