SUMMARY:COTE Green Walk - 2 LU/HSW
DESCRIPTION:green walk: tracing Austin’s connectivity & urban health\nRecognizing the intrinsic value of interconnected green space as a free-moving zone for humans\, critters\, microorganisms\, vegetation\, and hydrology could be the key to adapting and flourishing in a growing metropolis\, environmentally\, culturally\, equitably\, and economically.” – For more insights on green walks and urban health see Lauren Woodward Stanley’s article “The Drift” in ARCHITECT Magazine March/April 2021. \nCan we create green corridors and transects through the city that function as a vital part of our personal and urban health and resilience? \nOn foot\, we will explore urban green connectivity in a loop walk of about 5 miles\, convening and ending at a local eatery. As we arc through changing light and setting\, our focus will be on health and wellness indicators of what we observe and experience: green spaces\, natural systems\, built fabric\, mobility\, community vitality\, local culture\, and ourselves as active urban dwellers. \nParticipants will be asked to record this sojourn in a haiku or photo snapshots\, to be gathered at the conclusion. A digital compilation of these tokens of our attention to the details of an interwoven urban fabric will be collected as an Austin timestamp. \nRoute map to be provided at location start. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, or offers CE credit with a paid ticket. 2 LU/HSW \nCLICK TO REGISTER \n\nLauren Woodward Stanley\, AIA                       \nLauren is co-owner of Stanley Studio\, an integrated design practice she shares with Lars Stanley\, FAIA.  Their studio and shop produce award-winning architecture and metalwork at a wide range of scales that includes civic\, institutional\, and residential projects in addition to public and commissioned artwork and architectural accessories.  The full spectrum of the studio’s work integrates material craft and detail\, resilient and sustainable design\, and inventive embrace of environmental conditions.  Drawn to the intersection of architecture and landscape\, Lauren seeks design solutions that respond to site\, are adaptive and regenerative\, clever with material and resource use\, and forge a unique presence. \nA UT Austin School of Architecture MArch graduate\, Lauren spent a 9-year chapter in Seattle where she worked in several architectural firms before returning to Austin in 2005.  Since then\, while engaged in professional practice\, she has always kept an active civic role\, engaging in various community efforts and cultivating a driving interest in the healing potential of natural systems in the urban landscape.  Among these pursuits have been co-founding peer networking and advocacy groups such as Living City ATX (equitable access to urban nature) and GRoWERS (green roof non-profit)\, initiating and leading the EM Franklin Green Street under the city of Austin Neighborhood Partnering Program\, co-chairing AIA COTE Health & Wellness Committee\, and sitting on the city of Austin’s Green Roof Advisory Group\, Urban Design Guidelines Advisory Group\, Biophilic Cities ATX\, as well as speaking\, writing\, and serving as occasional guest critic at UTSOA.  She knows her two teenage boys will carry the torch trying to make a better world even if they don’t become architects. \n\nAbout COTE \nAIA Austin Committee On The Environment (COTE) reflects the profession’s commitment to provide healthy and safe environments for people\, and is dedicated to preserving the earth’s capability of sustaining a shared high quality of life. COTE typically meets the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. \nThe Committee on the Environment (COTE) is an American Institute of Architects Knowledge Community working with architects\, allied professionals\, and the public to achieve climate action and climate justice through design. We believe that design excellence is the foundation of a healthy\, sustainable\, and equitable future. Our work promotes design strategies that allow people\, communities\, and our planet to thrive.

SUMMARY:COTE Meeting - 1 LU
DESCRIPTION:Location\nZoom Information will be sent with registration confirmation. \nAIA 2030 Commitment Workshop with cove.tool\nDesigning Day-lit\, Glare Free\, Energy Efficient Buildings in Budget\nPresenters: Patricia Kusumadjaja and Marco Aguirre \nShifting energy codes are challenging architects with a wide array of parameters to balance like energy\, cost\, daylight\, views\, and embodied carbon. Hiring a consultant for every kind of analysis is a burden on fees. Many architects are harnessing simulation to shape the design and details of their projects. To be successful\, teams must understand the levers that impact the performance and set up processes for success. Join this session diving into two case studies to generate beautiful analysis graphics and see how to shape the narrative in a data driven design process. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nOverview of key performance parameters on project and their financial impact. We’ll dive into various building performance analyses including daylight analysis\, glare analysis\, shadow analysis\, sun hours\, radiation studies and more. Then\, we’ll examine how to balance cost to ensure the project is both high performance and within budget\nLearn about how 2 distinct teams iterated to achieve high performance project design. In building design\, collaboration is key. This course will provide examples of how teams can work together to create cost effective\, sustainable building designs.\nUse the case studies to understand the core workflow for performance driven decision making. To set up processes for success\, architects must understand the key factors that impact a building’s performance.\nTrack and report projects to the AIA 2030.There are many misconceptions about the 2030 challenge. We’ll explain how simple it is to measure progress\, reach targets\, and report to the DDX.\n\nThis is a Zoom event. Zoom information will be sent with registration confirmation. This event is free and open to the public\, or offers CE credit with a paid ticket. 1 LU (pending). All sales are final. \n\nAbout the Speakers\nPatricia Kusumadjaja is a Virtual Design and Construction Director at cove.tool. She has over eight years of experience working in the AEC industry\, namely in architectural cost estimating\, VDC\, and project delivery. Patricia earned her Bachelor of Architecture in 2015 from Kennesaw State University and her CEP from the AACEi in 2020. She strives to make a difference in the way owners\, construction and architectural professionals view high-performance design\, with the hope that sustainability and environmental consciousness becomes a non-negotiable priority in all future building design and construction. \nMarco Aguirre is the Research Director at cove.tool\, and has been with the company since 2018. cove.tool is an Atlanta-based SaaS company developing software to empower the AEC industry to achieve energy targets\, reduce construction costs\, and make data-driven decisions to fight climate change and democratize building performance. The suite of software products is now used by thousands of architects\, engineers\, contractors\, and developers in 22 countries around the world\, taught at top universities\, and in 2021 helped save 1.2 million metric tonnes of operational carbon emissions. In 2021\, his team was awarded the R+D award from Architects Magazine for their industry-changing design approach and product. As Director\, he coordinates the development of all new features and creates articles and videos on various topics such as sustainability\, building performance\, new technologies\, and best modeling practices.
