SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join BEC: Austin for their monthly meeting featuring a presentation and lunch.\nREGISTER NOW \nThe Structural Engineer’s Role in Getting to Net Zero\nPresented by Megan Stringer\, SE\, LEED AP BD+C\nAssociate Principal\nHolmes \nEmbodied carbon has become a major topic of conversation within the AEC industry as low-carbon construction is entering our building codes and projects. With the push for lower embodied carbon structures\, the collaboration between owners and architects with the structural engineer is vital to getting to net zero. This presentation will explore advances the design profession is making toward net zero embodied carbon structures\, discuss the Structural Engineers 2050 Commitment Program (SE 2050)\, and highlight the latest embodied carbon legislation. The presentation will also review the top actions structural engineers can take to reduce the embodied carbon in their projects\, discuss how design teams can make wiser design choices to reduce emissions\, highlight construction best practices\, and explore the resources and tools available. Case study projects will be presented and the carbon cutting strategies employed will be highlighted. \n1 LU/HSW (pending) \nMegan Stringer\, SE\, LEED AP BD+C\nAssociate Principal\nHolmes \n \nMegan Stringer is an Associate Principal with Holmes and works out of their San Francisco office. Motivated by our impact on the built environment\, Megan is at the forefront of reducing structural embodied carbon. She champions Holmes’ commitment to SE 2050 and gets sustainable structures built at impressive scales. Megan has overseen the construction of North America’s largest mass timber building\, numerous low-carbon concrete pours\, and many life-cycle assessments. Megan also serves as the Past President of Structural Engineers Association of Northern California. \nREGISTER NOW \n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas. \nInterdisciplinary: architects\, engineers\, contractors\, building owners\, consultants\, facility managers\, code officials\, educators\, manufacturers\, and those with a stake in building enclosure performance \nExchange of information: discussion\, training\, education\, outreach\, and awareness \nBuilding enclosures and related science: energy-efficiency\, moisture control\, indoor air quality\, longevity\, and durability \nBEC: Austin typically meets the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm. SUMMARY:BEC: Austin Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join BEC: Austin for their monthly meeting featuring a presentation and lunch.\nThank you to the lunch sponsor\, Sika \nREGISTER\nSealing the Building Envelope–Principles\, Products & Practice\nEMSEAL operates at the center of a communication disconnect that often exists between the design\narchitect responsible for selecting joint sealants and the engineers calculating joint movement. When this\nconversation ignores the movement capability of the product that is expected to seal the joints\, failures\noften result. EMSEAL’s “Sealing Joints in the Building Envelope” seminar provides practical steps to\navoid this and other common mistakes that affect joint sealing. \nLearning Objectives \n\nAnalyze how watertight\, energy efficient\, fire-rated expansion joints are the consequence of a process in which we: Design\, Detail\, Specify\, Bid\, Erect\, Manufacture\, & Install in 3-D.\nBe familiar with product technologies and how to apply them.\nWhy it is critical to require certified performance reports in your specifications.\nKnow that your next building can be a watertight structure.\n\n1 LU/HSW \nPresented by:\nGlenn Leondike\, Regional Manager at Sika Expansion Joints Emseal/Watson Bowman Acme \n\nGlenn Leondike has accumulated over 13 years of valuable experience in the construction industry\, specializing in waterproofing solutions. Prior to his tenure at EMSEAL Joint Systems\, where he has excelled for over a decade\, Glenn served as a waterproofing estimator at Chamberlain Roofing and Waterproofing. His extensive background in both technical expertise and project management has contributed significantly to the success of various construction projects throughout his career. \nREGISTER\n\nBEC: Austin is an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the exchange of information on building enclosures and related science specific to the climate of Central Texas. The consequences can be significant for the occupants\, builders\, and designers. The causes vary\, but often\, the rating of the selected window product simply does not meet the project demands or expectations. This presentation explains how manufactured window and door units resist wind pressure (structurally)\, as well as water penetration and air leakage. It also explains how window products are tested\, rated\, and certified\, and applicable code requirements. \nLearning objectives: \n\nDefinitions and naming conventions related to manufactured window products.\nCritical performance aspects of windows related to:\n\nStructural attachment\nWater and air leakage\n\n\nHow windows are tested\, rated\, and certified\nSelecting windows for specific projects based on their certification\nCodes and standards that apply to manufactured window products.\n\n1 LU/HSW \nREGISTER NOW \nMatt Carlton \n \nMr. Carlton is a Unit Manager and Principal in WJE’s Austin\, Texas office with 29 years of experience in assessment and repair design for a wide variety of structural and architectural materials and systems. Nicastro\, P.E.\, F.ASTM\nSenior Principal\nBuilding Diagnostics\, Inc.\, An ABB Company \nAll buildings use glass in the building envelope\, and all will have some breakage during their service life. But sudden\, unexplained breakage is not normal\, expected\, or acceptable. Spontaneous breakage is most likely caused by a defect in manufacturing\, fabrication\, or installation\, including: \n\nSurface Scratches\nEdge Defects\nThermal Shock\nEdge Contact\nInclusions\n\nThis presentation will synthesize a practical understanding of spontaneous glass breakage based on theoretical behavior and failure case studies\, with the following learning objectives: \n\nUnderstand the range of potential causes of spontaneous glass breakage and their likelihood.\nUnderstand the diagnostics techniques to differentiate between different causes.\nUnderstand the design\, fabrication\, and construction practices that can prevent spontaneous breakage.\nUnderstand mitigation strategies for buildings with a risk of ongoing breakage.\n\n1 LU \nPresenter bio: \n \nDavid H. Nicastro\, P.E.\, F.ASTM\nSenior Principal\nBuilding Diagnostics\, Inc.\, An ABB Company\nDNicastro@ABBae.com \nDavid H. Nicastro\, P.E.\, F.ASTM\, is a licensed professional engineer specializing in durability and failure causation theory. He analyzes existing buildings and designs remedies. He is the founder of Building Diagnostics and Engineering Diagnostics\, which grew to be an Inc. 500 firm by 2000. He also founded The Durability Lab\, a testing center housed at The University of Texas at Austin to study the durability of building components\, identifying factors causing premature failure. Mr. Nicastro is the past chairman of ASTM Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants\, and has published over 50 articles and books on durability and failure of building materials. \nNews Flash – On October 31\, 2022\, Building Diagnostics merged with Allana Buick & Bers\, Inc.
