DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of the P3 (public-private partnership) urban design project near the UT campus that transformed a 100-year-old church site into a 29-story student housing tower. The ground lease revenue from this P3 enabled St. Austin Catholic Church & School to also build a new school and ministry center. DESCRIPTION:BEC: Austin + AIA Austin Resiliency Advocacy Present:\n2024 City of Austin Wildland-Urban Interface Code Update\n(Day 1 of a two-part series)\nwith Beth Culver\, AIA\, CBO\, PMP\, is the lead Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Plans Examiner for the Austin Fire Department\nLunch sponsored by TimberTown \nThis course provides an in-depth overview of the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) and the necessity of the Wildland-Urban Interface Code (WUIC) to protect communities at risk from wildfires. Participants will examine the recent history of wildfires in Texas and explore how local environmental conditions and past wildfire events influenced the adoption of the WUIC in Austin. The course reviews the 2024 WUIC requirements\, highlighting key updates from the 2015 version and the rationale behind these changes. Attendees will also learn about the specific code requirements for new construction\, additions\, and remodels in Austin\, equipping them with the knowledge needed to ensure compliance and enhance public safety in wildfire-prone areas. \n  \nLearning Objective 1:\nDefine the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) and explain the necessity of the Wildland-Urban Interface Code (WUIC) to protect public health\, safety\, and welfare in at-risk communities.Learning Objective 2:\nAnalyze the recent history of wildfires in Texas and evaluate how wildfire events and local environmental conditions influenced the adoption of the WUIC in Austin.Learning Objective 3:\nReview the City of Austin 2024 WUIC requirements\, understanding significant changes from the 2015 WUIC and the reasons for these updates to better address evolving wildfire risks. \nLearning Objective 4:\nApply the current WUIC standards to new construction\, additions\, and remodels in Austin\, ensuring compliance with health\, safety\, and welfare objectives. \n\n\n1 LU/HSW\n\nPresenter:\n\nBeth Culver\, AIA\, CBO\, PMP\, is the lead Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Plans Examiner for the Austin Fire Department. With over 15 years of architectural experience\, she also previously served as Building Official and Assistant Director in the City of Austin’s Development Services Department. In her current role\, Beth oversees WUI code review and implementation\, including development of local amendments to the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code. She is a registered architect in Texas and Colorado\, a Certified Building Official\, Project Management Professional\, and member of several professional organizations\, including the American Institute of Architects and the Texas Fire Protection Association.
