Architecture Centers 2.0: A Journey from Foundation to Center in Chicago

The fourth out of five Design Talks for 2020 will be a talk by Lynn Osmond, President and CEO of Chicago Architecture Center. Originally planned at Austin Central Library, this event will now be taking place virtually as a Zoom webinar.

After more than 50 years, the Chicago Architecture Foundation re-emerged in 2018 as the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) with a highly visible, branded, museum-quality space and retail operation steps from Michigan Avenue. The Center’s 20,000 square feet provide the organization with near-limitless possibilities for exhibitions, pop-up displays, programs and public engagement. The location, just above the dock for the CAC’s River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady, is stunning, and the build-out makes the most of it by creating a beacon that calls out to Chicagoans and tourists enjoying the Magnificent Mile and Cultural Mile. Beyond the advantages of location and visibility, the innovative design by AS+GG and the meticulous build-out have transformed overlooked “found” space in the Mies-designed Illinois Center into a custom-built home befitting Chicago’s world-class architectural legacy. Hear from CAC President & CEO Lynn Osmond about the multi-year endeavor to test and refine the Center’s concept, scout downtown real estate and deliver a facility in service of Chicago and Chicagoans. In the midst of a global pandemic, learn how the CAC is responding to unprecedented challenges brought by workplace restrictions and a halt in tourism while redefining our partnerships in support of struggling neighborhoods.
