Advocacy Roundtable

Each month, the AIA Austin Advocacy Roundtable brings together professionals to discuss strategies individual professionals, practices, and AIA Austin can take to proactively advocate for issues important to our members and the larger community.

This month, the Housing Advocacy committee presents a Preview of Upcoming Code Changes, a preview and discussion of some of the next round of code changes Austin will consider in the coming year. These include new missing middle and mixed use zoning districts, a potential IRC amendment to incorporate up to four units, and more. Find out how you can help keep Austin on the forefront of nation-wide code reform efforts to make housing better, safer, and more affordable.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review current state of housing development in Austin in light of recent code changes, and how these changes have influenced housing affordability.
  2. Discuss recent city study outlining strategy for unlocking new missing middle and mixed use developments.
  3. Understand how missing middle and mixed use development benefits the city from a council perspective.
  4. Identify gaps and challenges that may need to be addressed in the study to fully implement the benefits of missing middle and mixed use development.
